FAQ's

Barcode Scanners

1.

My scanner does not seem to scan properly.

When a scanner does not read a barcode correctly it's usually because the scanner needs to be programmed to work with The Uniform Solution software.  The scanner is programmed by scanning a series of barcodes provided by the manufacturer of the scanner.  For a scanner to work correctly with The Uniform Solution software it must be configured to read Interleave 2of 5, read no less than an 8-digit barcode number and must be programmed with a carriage return.   You can visit our support page to look for the scanner setup sheet for your specific device or contact the manufacturer of the barcode scanner and provide them with the configurations listed above.

2.

My scanner reads the barcode numbers but doesn't add the item to a transaction.

When the scanner reads the barcode but does not add the item to a transaction this indicates that the scanner has not been programmed with a carriage return. The scanner is programmed by scanning a series of barcodes provided by the manufacture of the scanner. You can visit our support page to look for the scanner setup sheet for your specific device or contact the manufacturer of the barcode scanner and advise them that you need to program the scanner with a carriage return.

3.

Why is my barcode scanner not scanning

  1. Check all the cable connections to your scanner and to the computer to ensure the cables have not come loose or been disconnected.
  2. If the scanner is a USB connection try disconnecting the cable from the USB port and then reconnect. Do not shut-down the computer. The computer should be on when connecting most USB devices.
  3. If your scanner is an older model keyboard connection with a decoder box you will need to shut-down the computer before disconnecting or connecting any cables to the computer or to the decoder box. After the computer is turned off, disconnect and reconnect all the cables to the decoder box and to the computer. Turn the computer on after you have reconnected all the cables.
  4. After you have checked all the connections and cables and if the scanner still doesn't scan, refer to the manual that came with your scanner or call Diamond Data Systems.

Plug the swipe reader into an available USB port on your computer. When you plug the swipe reader into a USB port a pop-up screen will appear on the lower right-hand corner of your screen. At this time, Windows is installing the necessary drivers that this device needs to function correctly. Please wait until the install is complete before attempting to use this device.

2.

My Zebra/Eltron tag printer is printing out blank lines

Your print head is probably dirty and needs to be cleaned. Paper dust can build-up on the print head also known as the platen and when this happens, the print head needs to be cleaned.  You can use either the cleaning pen that came with the printer or a Q-tip with isopropyl alcohol (should not be dripping wet).  Open the printer (the printer does not have to be off).  Allow the print head to cool (approximately one (1) minute).  Remove the ribbon.  The print elements are located in the dark lines on the print head.  Rub the pen or Q-tip with alcohol across the print head to clean.

After you have cleaned the print head and if the printer is still printing out tags/labels with blank lines, refer to the manual that came with your printer or call Diamond Data Systems.
