Configuring a Small Home or Office Network - Windows XP

The instructions below are for configuring a small home or office network and is based on Windows XP.

Network Configurations

1.

Open My Network Placesand on the left-hand side of the screen, click View Network Connections. 

2. On the right-hand side of the screen, right-click on Local Area Connection and left-click on Properties.
4. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the Properties . 
5. On the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties screen is where you can either Obtain an IP address automatically or assign an IP address.  The default IP setting is to Obtain an IP address automatically.   Check with your IT personnel when setting up your TCP/IP address.  Click OK to save the configurations; you will be returned to the previous screen. 
6. At the bottom of this screen put a check mark in Show icon in notification area when connected.  Leave the check mark in notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity click OK to save the changes.  

Setup a Small Home or Office Network

7. On the left-hand side of your screen under Network Task, click on Setup a Small Home or Office Network. 
8. The Network Wizard opens click next. 
9. A Before you continue screen appears click next. 
10. If a screen appears asking if you want to use the shared connections, select NO let me choose another way to connect to the Internet click next.
11. The Select a connection method screen appears.   Select  Other and click next.
12. The Other Network Connection screens opens Select the third option This computer belongs to a network that does not have an Internet connection (since you are setting up a network between computers, it's not necessary to select any settings for the Internet at this time.) click next. 
13. The Give this computer a description and name screen appears.  It's not necessary to give the computer a description but you do need to give the computer a name.  The name is what will appear on the network.
14. The Name your network screen appears; enter a name for your network.  The default network name is MSHome.  We recommend you change the network name to something other than MSHome.  When we configure a system for a customer, we use UNIFORM as the workgroup name.
15. If you want to share printers across the network, you need to Turn on file and print sharing click next.
16. Ready to apply network settings click next.
17. The progress screen appears.
18. The Your're almost done screen appears.  Select "Just finish the wizard; I don't need to run the wizard on other computers" click next.
19. Completing the Network Setup screen appears click Finish.
20. You must restart your computer for the settings to take effect click Yes.
21. To view other computers on the network go to My Network Places and click on View Workgroup Computers.  A list of computers that are currently connected to your computer will appear.
 
NOTE:  If you have more than one item listed under Network Adapters in the Device Manager a screen will appear during the setup prompting you to select a connection or let Windows choose, you want to make sure you select the Local Area Connection in the list and make sure no other items are selected in the list before you continue.
